Your step by step guide to obtaining a North Carolina Class A CDL!

Commercial Driver's License

4 Steps to Get A North Carolina Commercial Driver's License

1. Review North Carolina CDL Requirements

Before you begin the process of getting a North Carolina commercial driver's license, the best thing to do is review the state CDL requirements. Some of these requirements include a minimum age requirement and CDL physical requirements.  By reviewing this information ahead of time, you will be prepared to move onto the next steps without any unexpected surprises.

2. Get Your North Carolina CDL Permit

Just like getting a regular driver's license in the state of North Carolina, a permit is required to move forward with the steps of obtaining a North Carolina Class A CDL.  You can get a Class A CDL permit by passing a series of written exams. A Commercial Driver's License handbook or manual can be found at the DMV/BMV in North Carolina, or can be found online here (pg. 1-3), and provides the exact requirements for obtaining a permit.

3. Add CDL Endorsements

If you wish to add an endorsement to your North Carolina CDL, you will need to pass written CDL endorsement tests.  Be sure to research your endorsements beforehand as some, such as the Hazardeous Materials (HazMat) endorsement, may also require a background check before they can be added to your CDL license in North Carolina. Consult the CDL endorsements section of the North Carolina manual for more information (pg. 17).

4. Take North Carolina CDL Skills and Knowledge Tests

In North Carolina, a CDL driving test must be passed in which the driver completes a knowledge and skills test. Knowledge tests can be taken at any full service Driver's License branch, and skills tests can be taken at various Driver's License locations throughout the state as well as at certified 3rd party testing locations. Once the skills test has been passed, a driver can be issued an actual CDL license from the State of North Carolina.
