A complete guide to getting your Pennsylvania Class A CDL!

Get a Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License In 4 Steps

1. Review Pennsylvania CDL Requirements

The best place to start with getting a commercial driver's license in Pennsylvania is to review the basic CDL requirements. Some of these include a minimum age requirement as well as physical health and vision requirements.  By reviewing this information ahead of time, you will be prepared to move onto the next steps without any unexpected surprises.

2. Get Your Pennsylvania CDL Permit

Just like getting a regular driver's license in the state of Pennsylvania, a permit is required to move forward with the steps of obtaining a Pennsylvania Class A CDL. You can get a Class A CDL permit by passing a series of written exams as well as a vision test.  You can download the application for a Pennsylvania Class A CDL permit here. A person must also self-certify what type of driving they intend to engage in by completing this form.

3. Add CDL Endorsements

If you wish to add an endorsement to your Pennsylvania CDL, you will need to pass written CDL endorsement tests.  Be sure to research your endorsements beforehand as some, such as the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement, may also require a background check before they can be added to your CDL license in Pennsylvania. Consult the CDL endorsements section of the Pennsylvania manual for more information.

4. Take Pennsylvania CDL Skills Test

In Pennsylvania, a CDL driving test must be passed in which the driver completes a 3-part exam that includes a knowledge test, endorsements knowledge test, and skills test. A person can sign up online to schedule their skills test, and can be taken at a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation site or at a certified 3rd party testing site.
