4 Steps to Get A Missouri Commercial Driver's License
1. Review Missouri CDL Requirements
Before you begin the process of getting a Missouri commercial driver's license, the best thing to do is review the Missouri state CDL requirements. Some of these requirements include a minimum age requirement and CDL physical requirements. By reviewing this information ahead of time, you will be prepared to move onto the next steps without any unexpected surprises.
2. Get Your Missouri CDL Permit
Just like getting a regular driver's license in the state of Missouri, a permit is required to move forward with the steps of obtaining a Missouri Class A CDL. You can get a Class A CDL permit by passing a series of written exams. In Missouri, the written tests to get a Class A CDL permit include, but are not limited to, tests over topics such as: General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Combination vehicles. A Commercial Driver's License handbook or manual (page 14) can be found at a local License Office in Missouri. To be eligible for a Commercial Learner's Permit in Missouri, a person:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must hold a valid Missouri based driver license
- Must have passed written, road sign, and vision tests
3. Add CDL Endorsements
If you wish to add an endorsement to your Missouri CDL, you will need to pass written CDL endorsement tests. Be sure to research your endorsements beforehand as some, such as the Hazardeous Materials (HazMat) endorsement, may also require a background check before they can be added to your CDL license in Missouri. Consult the CDL endorsements section of the Missouri manual (page 14) for more information.
4. Take Missouri CDL Skills Test
In Missouri, a CDL driving test must be passed in which the driver completes a 3-part exam that includes a pre-trip inspection test, basic control skills test, and driving test at a State skills testing location. A person must make an appointment to take the skills test, and must have held a CDL permit and held it for a minimum of 14 days prior to taking the test. Current testing locations can be found here. Once the skills test has been passed, a driver can be issued an actual CDL license from the State of Missouri.
