Understanding the DOT Physical
One of the more confusing parts of the application process in becoming a truck driver is knowing what truck driver qualifications there are to meet, and knowing what to expect during a DOT physical and drug screening. We receive a lot of questions about specific requirements and general information about this part of the process, so let's take a look at what it all means so you have an idea of what to expect.
What to Expect During Your DOT Physical
During your DOT physical, an approved medical examiner will test your overall health by seeing what medications you use (if any), testing your blood pressure, and testing your vision and hearing among other things. See the chart on this page more details on the standards, requirements, and possible solutions if you do not meet them for each category:
Drug Screening
You will also be administered a drug screening upon arrival at the training facility, which will test you for:
- Marijuana
- Cocaine
- Amphetamines
- Opiates
- Phencyclidine (PCP)
In addition to this pre-employment drug screening, you will be tested randomly throughout your employment as a driver.
