Uber Driving Jobs vs. Truck Driving Jobs

Looking for an Uber driving job?  Have you also considered truck driving?

As it turns out, many Uber drivers or people considering Uber, make great truck drivers.

Why?  Because they love to drive and truck driving jobs offer more career opportunities than Uber.  Sure, Uber is great if you want to make some quick cash or have a side gig.  But where do you go from there?

Vehicles - Uber

Driving for Uber sounds like fun.  You get to work your own schedule and be your own boss.  But you also have to drive your OWN car.

So, what happens when the passengers you pick up are drunk and decide to make a mess in your back seat?  Well, you're responsible.

What about oil changes, gas and repairs?  Sure, you get discounts and there are partnerships - but ultimately YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE.

In the beginning, stuff like this may seem like no big deal.  And it might not be if you're only driving for Uber here and there.  However, if you're really trying to make as much money as you can this stuff can become a headache real quick.

Vechicles - Trucking

While there's certainly a learning curve to driving a big 18-wheel semi truck, there's something to be said for not having to maintain the vehicle.  Unless you're an Owner Operator, you'll be able to rely on the trucking company to completely cover the costs of repair, maintenance and fuel.  That means one less headache when it comes to maintaining your vehicle for making money.

Further, there's a good chance that if you drive for a reputable company that you'll be able to get behind the wheel of a nicer, newer truck every few years.  The same cannot be said if you're the one responsible for purchasing the vehicle.

Career Advancement - Uber

Again, Uber is a great way to have some side hustle.  You can make decent money quickly. But what happens when it's time to take the next step?  What if you want driving to really be your career?

One common theme you will see with Uber is that career advancement is tough to non-existant.  Many Uber drivers struggle to find managment that supports and encourages career growth.  That can pose some road blocks which cause Uber drivers to get burnt out.

Career Advancement - Trucking

The beautiful thing about trucking is that the level of career advancement is HUGE.  Once you get a year of experience in, so many doors will open up to new opportunities and you might even have the opportunity to pick and choose whatever it is that you want to do.

You could become an Owner Operator, Drive a Dedicated Lane, try to find a local truck driving job.  And that's just naming a few.  The bottom line is that after a year of experience and a good record, you'll most likely be able to find a truck driving job that fits the life you want to live.  That might be weekly home time or the opportunity to run your own little mini-business.  The bottom line is, the career advancement is there and in many ways you're in full control!

Driving - Uber

Driving for Uber most likely means a lot of the same routes as most Uber drivers stay nearby their home.  This may be fun for some, while boring for others.  After all, there are only so many times you can go to the airport and back. Most likely, you won't get the chance to really see the country being an Uber driver.

Driving - Trucking

Truck driving jobs, on the other hand, give you the ability to see the country.  If you truly like the idea of getting paid to travel to new places then trucking has much more to offer.  Driving to drive is one thing, but most people want to drive because they enjoy the scenery and open road.

Getting Started

Both Uber driving jobs and truck driving jobs are relatively easy to get started.  As long as you meet the basic qualifications, it's just a matter of going through the process until you are ready to hit the road making money.

Yes, trucking does require a Commercial Driver's License.  But getting your CDL adds extreme value to your marketability in the transportation industry.  A CDL along with a year of experience is what makes the career opprtunities possible where Uber falls short.
