Your Complete Guide to Getting an Arkansas Class A CDL.

Commercial Driver's License

4 Steps to Get An Arkansas Commercial Driver's License

1. Review Arkansas CDL Requirements

Before you begin the process of getting an Arkansas commercial driver's license, the best thing to do is review the state's CDL requirements. Some of these requirements include a minimum age requirement and CDL physical requirements.  By reviewing this information ahead of time, you will be prepared to move onto the next steps without any unexpected surprises.

2. Get Your Arkansas Commercial Learner's Permit

Just like getting a regular driver's license in the state of Arkansas, a permit is required to move forward with the steps of obtaining an Arkansas Class A CDL. Before getting your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), a person must meet the following requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age and be able to provide proof of his/her age.
  • Pass a general knowledge test that meets the Federal standards.
  • Certify that he/she is not subject to any license disqualification under State law, and does not have a driver's license from more than one State or jurisdiction.
  • Provide general information required to be on the CLP.
  • Provide proof of citizenship or permanent residency.
  • Provide proof that he/she actually lives in that domicile by providing a document with his/her name and residential address within the State, such as a government issued tax form.
  • Provide names of all States where the applicant has been licensed to drive any type of motor vehicle in the past 10 years.
  • Take and pass the additional knowledge and/or skills tests for the endorsement he/she is seeking to obtain.

3. Add CDL Endorsements

If you wish to add an endorsement to your Arkansas CDL, you will need to pass specific written CDL endorsement tests.  Be sure to research your endorsements beforehand as some, such as the Hazardeous Materials (HazMat) endorsement, may also require a background check before they can be added to your CDL license in Arkansas. Consult the CDL endorsements section of the Arkansas manual for more information.

4. Take Arkansas CDL Skills Test

In Arkansas, a CDL driving test must be passed in which the driver completes a 2-part exam that includes knowledge tests and skills tests. A person can take a written test at all trooper locations in Arkansas, and can take the skills test at 1 of 6 Arkansas State Police locations throughout the state. These 6 locations are:

  • Little Rock
  • Newport
  • Russellville
  • Hope
  • Pine Bluff
  • Springdale

Once the skills test has been passed, a driver can be issued an actual CDL license from the State of Arkansas. To learn more about what to expect on both tests, you can read through the Arkansas Commercial Driver's License Manual.
