Your step by step guide to getting your Michigan Class A CDL!

How to: Get a Michigan Commercial Driver's License

1. Review Michigan CDL Requirements

When it comes to getting a Michigan commercial driver's license, the best place to start is with reviewing the state CDL requirements. Included among these is a minimum age requirement and DOT physical requirements.  Take the time to review this information beforehand, so there aren't any unexpected surprises during the process.

2. Get Your Michigan CDL Permit

As with getting a regular driver's license in the state of Michigan, a permit is required to move forward with the steps of obtaining a Michigan Class A CDL.  You can get a Class A CDL permit by passing a series of written exams as well as a vision test.  It's always a good idea to review what is required to get your permit beforehand.

3. Add CDL Endorsements

If you wnat to add an endorsement to your Michigan CDL, you will need to pass written CDL endorsement tests.  Be sure to research your endorsements beforehand as some, such as the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement, may also require a background check before they can be added to your CDL license in Michigan. Consult the CDL endorsements section of the Michigan manual for more information.

4. Take Michigan CDL Skills Test

In Michigan, a CDL driving test must be passed in which the driver completes a 3-part exam that includes a knowledge test, endorsement knowledge test, and skills test. All 3 must be taken at the same time, in successive order. Once the skills test has been passed, a driver can be issued an actual CDL license from the State of Michigan.
