I get asked questions about trucking all the time. I try to answer as many as I can. I don't think there's such a thing as a bad question, especially when it comes to learning about what life is like as a trucker.
Below are my answers to 5 questions that I think every newbie has considered at some point. I know I wondered a lot of the same things when I was thinking about getting into trucking.

Q: Is trucking a good choice financially?
A: It can be. You aren't going to start off with the best loads making that most money right out of the gate. That's just the reality of it. But after some time, you can make good money...especially as an Owner Operator. That's the direction I'm headed, but you need to get the experience first!
While you may be able to make a lot of money sitting in a call center answering phones like I was at Verizon and Comcast - at some point you need to ask yourself is sitting at a desk all day really fulfilling? For me, it just wasn't.
Bottom line - if you really want to commit to trucking then, yes, you can make some good money. If you are just looking to do it for a little while, you're not gonna get rich!

Q: What's the best way for a newbie to get started?
A: Get your CDL! You can find companies out there who will pay for your CDL training. This is how I got started. The trucking company pays for your CDL training and you owe them some amount of service in return. There are a lot of good companies that do this.
Do your research - make sure you take it all in, the good and the bad. The only constant in this industry is change. Things are always changing and you need to be ready to deal with it.
I LOVE IT! Love it. Love it. Love it. And I'll never do anything else.

Q: What's it like living and sleeping in a truck? Does it feel like home? And what about the beds?
A: If you're worried about sleeping on a mattress someone else has crashed on, remember all the big companies will replace it. If by some chance you need to wait on a new mattress like I did once, just put down a lot of blankets on top of it LOL.
As for making the truck feel like home - bring things that make you happy and comfortable. Don't overload it with a bunch of silly stuff. Remember you have to LIVE in it! But really, if that's what you want to do (fill it with trinkets and decorations) - then go for it. I like to keep things minimal, but I have definitely seen the opposite out here.
Final thoughts - make it your own! Think of it as moving into an apartment or even a house. It's not your own until you make it your own.

Q: If I become a trucker will you be my trainer?
A: No, but you can watch my videos! Seriously, whether it's me or someone else - you can learn a lot about what life's like as a trucker in these videos.
Watching these videos is a first hand look into trucking - real and honest. It's as close as you can get to riding along with me.

What are the pros and cons of being a truck driver?
There are so many of each to list and really I think it's all about the way you look at it. Just a few of them are below:
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
You get to see the country | You don't get to see your family as much as you might like |
You get to wake up in someplace different every day |
You have to wake up someplace different every day |
You get to set your own schedule | You're responsible for your schedule and getting places on time |
Trucking is an extremely important job. You're literally transporting the necessities people depend on in everyday life such as food and clothes.
With every pro comes a con; but, it's all about perspective and how you look at things. Isn't that how everything in life is anyways?
