Truck Driver Honored For Saving Life - Shawn Hubbard

At truck driving school, we have the opportunity to work with alot of great people.  We take pride in providing our students with the best trucking training possible to prepare for their truck driving job and life on the road.  We frequently read about special truck drivers that go above and beyond the call of duty while on the road.  While we cannot share all of these stories, we do want to recognize some on our blog.  Today, we would like to share the story of Shawn Hubbard.

Hubbard was recently named a Truckload Carriers Association Highway Angel for rescuing the life of a young man trapped inside a burning car.  Hubbard was driving down I-60 in California when he saw flames from a car that had been smashed and was down in a ditch against a 40- ft. high embankment.  Hubbard came to a stop in his truck and no one else had arrived on scene.  He saw two heads inside the car and quickly realized that it was a very dangerous situation with lives at stake.  Hubbard used a fire extinguisher to slow the flames, but the fire continued and Hubbard realized he needed to get them out of the car.
Out of pure adrenaline, Hubbard was able to get enough strength to push a more than 300-pound passenger up the embankment to safety with some minor injuries, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.   The California Highway Patrol presented Hubbard with a Certificate of Commendation.  He also received an award from a Los Angeles County Supervisor, as well as a Gold “R” certificate from Ruan.

Hubbard is satisfied how things turned out that day. “I could have just kept on going when I saw the fire, but I didn’t,” he said. “One family had to deal with burying their son that day. I’m glad at least a second family didn’t have to.”

This is just one story of many involving a truck driver that goes beyond the call of duty taught in truck driver training to help those in need out on the road.  We will continue to share stories like Hubbard's as these truck drivers deserve the recognition for their service.
